The opening of the ski slopes is just around the corner. Thanksgiving is when many ski areas try to open all across the US. This is the time when racers need to be thinking about what they need for the upcoming season. Are the boots OK for another season? Do you need new skis? Simple things like poles and a new GS Suit or Helmet. You wouldn’t believe how many families wait until the week before Race Camp starts to purchase equipment. The problem is that the companies always run out of the popular sizes. That week before camp may be to late to get it from the manufacturer. You might be going to camp and racing for the season on your 2nd or 3rd choice. Even worse, you might be using last year’s worn out equipment. This is the time to talk to your boot technician and set up times to get everything set up. They have the time to spend with you when they are not rushed. As the season gets closer the good race technicians get busier and busier. None of us like to wait for a hour or more just to talk to them. If you need a size that your shop is out of there is still time to get the proper equipment in.

“The Race Crew of Bahnhof Sport”

Gone Paddling

<img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; I am luck, I always have a boat or 2 on the van and my paddling bag in it. It is real easy to duck out for lunch to paddle. I am lucky, I have Lake Michigan 1 mile away from the office, Walloon Lake about 4 miles, Crooked Lake & Pickerel Lake about 6 Miles, Round Lake 3 Miles and the Bear River take-out about 50 yards.

A week ago I was headed paddling with my daughter on Walloon Lake and as we approached the planed put-in at Jones Landing we realized that the wind was picking up and the put-in would be exposed. On the fly we decided to switch to another put-in that was protected. As we made the turn Samantha commented: “Dad do realize how lucky we are to have as many choices as we do?” We have at least 20 – 30 choices available in less than a 15 mile radius.

We are so excited about the new White Water course that Petoskey is building on the Bear River. The finished course will be just over a mile long with a natural drop of about 85 feet. It will have a dedicated put-in and take-out for whitewater paddlers. Large boulders will be placed in the river creating small drops, holes and eddies along the length of the course. The end features a drop over the Lake Street Dam, about 4 feet and a channel leading to Little Traverse Bay. The sides will be lined in many places with Boardwalks and over views for spectators. The project is part af a larger project improving the whole Bear River Valley. The Best part is that the Whitewater putin is about 50 yards from our office!

We got a chance to paddle the Hurricane Tampico 14L on Saturday. It has been a strong seller ever since it came out. What a nice paddling boat! Check out the video of Missy in it. She also tried out Lindy’s Naish Stand Up Paddle Board and want one! Surprise, Surprise! As ski shop operators we get so that we take them for granted. A few products come to mind.

1. Tecnica Skandia after ski boots. These have been on the market for years with very little change. Sure the sizing was revamped for us Americans and the trim color changes once in a while but the basic design is the same as it was when we started selling them years ago. Ladies call every day talking about how they are replacing an old friend when the order a new replacement pair. These boots seem to last forever.
2. Patagonia Long Underwear. Sure they change the name and modify the material but the concept is the same. A synthetic garment that doesn’t stink, washes well, dries quickly and keeps you warm. The fact that it looks great is a bonus. Who among us hasn’t used it to ski or snowboard in, Camping, shovel the drive, bicycle, hike, or jog? I would never think of going paddling without a set in my bag. I shipped a set to my dad to wear around the farm in Virginia. The last thing my son threw in his car as he left to teach tennis in Florida was a new top.
3. Merrill Slide shoes. Around us these are the comfort shoe of choice around work. Easy on and off, look good. Warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They can look dressy or casual. They are one of those shoes that seem to fit better the longer you own them. If you own one pair, you are always looking for a 2nd pair.
4. Turtle Fur fleece neck warmers. Who ever knew that you could harvest the fur of a turtle? Does it grow back??? What winter person doesn’t have at least one in the car. Our kids have grown up with it being as important as gloves when they leave for school every morning.
5. Marker Spring gloves & Montana Gloves. These

winners are great warm weather ski gloves, cold weather driving gloves, work gloves or dress gloves, We cry when the mate seems to disappear.

We all can think of items that we have used for years that have not changed with time.

http://www.bahnhof.com/

It's New! Northern Michigan is the center of the world. Within 10 minutes of our office and store we have 4 nice sized lakes (Walloon Lake, Crooked Lake, Pickerel Lake, Round Lake, and Lake Michigan). We have 2 of the best ski areas in the Midwest with a 3rd just 15 minutes away (Nubs Nob, Boyne Highlands, & Boyne Mountain). We also have as many scenic miles of nice paved roads and trails to peddle on as your heart desires. Sure we don’t have the huge peaks of the western mountains or the warm water of the southern shores but tell me where else you can find it all so convenient? Now if your idea of the perfect place to live has tons of malls surrounding you, don’t look at Petoskey, our nearest mall is almost seventy miles away and we are OK with that.

Yesterday I introduced Danna to the idea of going kayaking for lunch. We left at 1:00 PM and high-tailed it to the Stolt rd. put-in on Walloon Lake. We would have left earlier but she didn’t have a swimsuit with her (silly girl). We were able to paddle about 40 minutes on a gorgeous day, eat lunch on the water, enjoy a swim and get back, refreshed on a hot day. OK, so we were an hour and 12 minutes but we got some great photos to use for the web and print ads so it was really work.
It’s not at all unusual for one or two of our people to go skiing or snowboarding during lunch in the winter (we have groomed XC trails just 3 minutes away). We use the bike path all summer long during lunch. It goes right past the stores front door.
We are real pumped for next summer; it looks as if the city will be constructing a white water course on the Bear river. The put-in for this class 3-4 course is just 50 yards from our offices. Just think about how much fun we can have next summer, a quick run during lunch or after work!
I am a big believer that there are great places to play anywhere you live but you just have to get out and find them. Oh sure we have Whitewater Paddlers, Touring paddlers, Sea Kayakers,……… I am talking about paddling on a more basic sense. Are you the type that goes on the river that everyone else goes to? Do you paddle the same harbor or area of the lake each time? Or do you drive around always looking, always wondering “ What is that stretch like?”. Do you have a worn-out Gazetteer in each of your vehicles? Are you always looking at the new GPS’s, searching for the perfect mapping GPS that never has dead batteries. Is Google Earth one of your most used bookmarks, not to mention Earthwind, Delorme Topo & Garmin Mapsource. As you may have figured, I am a member of the latter.

Many of my friends paddle the same place every time they paddle. For some it is in front of the house on the lake. For others it is the same section of the local river over and over again. Many people do this because there is a certain comfort factor in doing a paddle that they have done many times. You know how long it should take, where to stop for lunch, what time you will be done, etc. Chances are that it hasn’t changed all that much from the last time you paddled it. There is nothing wrong with this type of paddling but……

There are a group of us that love to pour over maps looking for new rivers and lakes that we have never paddled or that has never been attempted. Whitewater paddlers have a term for it “First Descent”, We all dream of being the first to successfully make a run or to be the first to explore an area or lake somewhere. Being the first is hard to achieve in the 21st century. The world has gotten smaller and there are more paddlers looking for new experiences. But the dream lives on. Maybe it is the same dream that motivated Lewis & Clark or John Wesley Powell. I am sure Bill Mason was motivated by that dream as he paddled wilderness rivers and lakes in Canada.

As realist, we can say “ it’s all been done!” But as dreamers we know the thrill and anticipation as we put in a new river of lake. We have studied the maps & photos and made our plans. Even though we have done the research we realize that we have to have some flexibility in the process. The current may be faster/slower than anticipated, there may be deadfalls to deal with or rocks and other obstacles that we didn’t plan on. The 6 hour trip may only take 3 hours or……. may take 9 hours to finish and we know the spouse isn’t going to be very happy!!!!!

I would be the first to tell you that some of the most anticipated trips have turned out to be somewhat less than anticipated but…… There are the times on a new lake or river that you round a bend and see the nesting Eagles, the Loon Family calling back and forth, or the Elk or Dear standing there. The times you find a place that demands that you stop and cast a fly, because morally it was the right thing to do. We all can remember places where we pulled over and just sat there, quietly enjoying the moment with our paddling partners.

For some of us these trips are major adventures with major planning. One of my friends hiked the Inca trail last winter, Paddled the Apostle Islands last summer and just returned from paddling Isle Royal. Fantastic trips…. Sure! Were all of these trips a fantastic experience????? Probably not ( don’t ask about the 40 degrees, wind and rain in July on Isle Royal. ). But were they all memorable? ABSOLUTLY!

For many of us these trips consist of anything from a couple of hours to a couple of days in the local area. The key point is that we are always looking, always dreaming, and always in search of the perfect trip. Will we ever find it? Hopefully not, if we do what is there to search for in the future?
GH
http://www.bahnhof.com/

PS: You can substitute Biking or Hiking for Paddling above….

Kids & Paddling

When is it time to introduce your kids to Canoe & Kayaking? The answer is going to differ depending on the family. For most of us at the Bahnhof it was as soon as the weather hit the 70’s and the water warmed up. My son went in the canoe for the first time at about 2 years. He sat on the floor or stood with both hands on the yoke bouncing up and down. Missy’s kids have both followed at about 2 years and have had great experiences. I have read articles written about families touring the Boundary Waters with young children and there seems to be some basic similarities in their experiences as well as ours.

1. Buy a good fitting youth PFD. Make sure that it fits well. If you get one that doesn’t fit or is too big it, will be uncomfortable. Not wearing a PFD should not be a subject for discussion. Around the water the kids wear it. You should get in the habit of wearing yours also, If the kids see you wearing yours they won’t even think that it is an option.

2. Start off with short trips maybe just an hour in real nice weather. You need to be flexible with the schedule. Kids are just like us, some days are better than others. You may just get going and find out that it just isn’t going to work today. If that is the case don’t get upset or put out with them. Just move on to Plan B.

3. Have a Plan B! This is really important. In order to smoothly switch to another plan we don’t want to make a big deal about it at the launch site. Plan B can be as simple as sitting on the waters edge tossing stones. I’ve never meet a little boy that wasn’t infatuated with throwing stones in water. Looking for pollywogs is a good one too. This is a great time to float in PFD’s at the beach.

4. Have toys available but don’t give them out all at once. Simple items such as balls and squirt guns are great. Heck I love playing with my water cannon. Make sure that whatever you take can get wet and doesn’t have great sentimental or monetary value. Things do fall over or get dropped overboard. I had a trip on the James River where I had to paddle hard to catch one of my then 3 year old daughter’s new Nike shoes that thought it was entered in the duck races!!! I would think long and hard before I took a child’s favorite blanket or doll.

5. Dry clothes, diapers, and cleaning supplies. Sun Screen and Hats.

6. As adults we travel on our stomachs, it’s even more important with kids. gorp, cheese & crackers, summer sausage, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, M&M’s, Juice and Water. You don’t have to wait until they tell you that they are hungry or thirsty. When you see their attention wandering offer them something. Make sure the snacks are not messy.

7. Take the opportunity to point out birds, animals, etc. along the way.

Above it all, MAKE IT FUN. If they have fun at these young ages, we will create adults that enjoy paddling.

http://www.bahnhof.com/

Paddle Up or Down?

As paddle sports enthusiasts we have watched it appearing on the horizon for the last couple of years. The choice is whether to Paddle a kayak sitting down or to paddle standing up on a paddle board? Kayaking is one of the most traditional forms of on water transportation and recreation, the equipment and style has remained basically unchanged for centuries. You sit in a shell with your feet out front and paddle with a double ended paddle. Sure the boats & paddles are a lot more hi-tech, but the idea is the same. If you live in a water community like I do you see lots of kayaks on the roofs of cars and hanging out of the back end of pickups. In the morning, throughout the day and in the evening you see people kayaking on Lake Michigan as well as on all of the inland lakes around us.

Lately you may have noticed that there seems to be more and more surfboards on the roofs of cars around time. They are longer old school type boards, at first one might think that people have been hitting the garage sale circuit pretty hard. These are a lot bigger than what we see on ESPN in the big waves of Hawaii. At the put in, you watch them unload the board and then pull out a real long canoe paddle! They flop the board on the water, Jump on and paddle away. Welcome to the world of Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUP for Short). Developed by Surfers for use when the waves are smaller, people are getting a great core workout in flat water as well as in big waves. Check out some of the You Tube videos when you have a chance, they are amazing.

In surf communities SUP’s are popular. In Northern Michigan they are just catching on.. Most of us are looking at them as a fun, new method of getting that workout. We see a lot of people paddling around the harbors on them.

The learning curve seems pretty straight forward. People that are surfers or Sailboarders have it made. They “step into it” easily. Skiers and people that come to it from sports that require good balance and coordination quickly get to the point where they can paddle upright in flat conditions. Check out Lindy, a lifelong skier, after just 5 minutes on a SUP. How long does it take to learn to handle the big waves? Time will tell.
Check out the great selection of Stand Up Paddle Boards fron Bic, OxBow and Naish available from Bahnhof Sport.

http://www.bahnhof.com/

Stand Up Paddlebboards

Is it a kayak? Is it a surfboard? No – It’s our new Bahnhof obsession - PADDLEBOARDS are here!!! I have been waiting for these to come in like a kid for Christmas! We carry now the latest and greatest from Naish, Oxbow and Bic so there is a variety sure to entice you as well. This sport dates back to the early 20th century with Hawaiian roots designed around a surfboard core, this longer and wider version allows stability for stand up performance on inland waterways to ocean waves. The versatility of handling various sizes of waves and making flat waters fun is the main reason I think it’s a perfect fit for our area. It is hard to find adequate waves breaks and usually we are chasing the wind from Charlevoix to Stuergeon Bay hoping to get out for at least an hour. With the paddleboards it makes even the smallest waves a blast to ride and the ease of paddling back out is half the fun as well!! The designs are beautifully crafted with visible wood veneers and tribal prints. There is a conveniently placed handle groove for easy transport. The paddle is well crafted and has an ergonomically shaped handle which allows a greater ease for moving thru waterways. The width offers unparallel stability and add on features for water bottles are available as well. So grab your sunscreen and your sense for a new adventure and come down to see us! We offer personal classes and rentals available any day of the week! See you soon : ) Morupnorth

http://www.bahnhof.com/

March Skiing

March skiing means different things to every skier.

For many it means that it’s time to go on the ski trip that they’ve been looking forward to all winter. It’s time to pack the bags, stand in line at the airport, stress over whether the bags are going to show at the same airport that you get off the plane from, and be giddy with anticipation. We are praying for snow at night and warm sunshine during the day. It’s a week of early breakfasts, hustle to be the first skier to make tracks, burning thighs in the afternoon, and the fun of sitting on the deck with friends, having drinks while relating how you taught the mountain a lesson today. Hit the hot tub and then beat up the town tonight, and do it all again tomorrow.
For others it is wrapping up the ski racing season. We are deciding whether we will qualify to go to the championships. Do I need a new pair of skis for that little extra speed at the end? We worry whether the conditions will be icy or soft and what should I do for the wax. Is that Cera or Helix wax really worth the money, will it make the difference and how am I going to explain the cost to my significant other! After the season I’ll hit the slopes for some free skiing but I am already planning my strategy for next year, the new equipment and the training program for the summer.

There is another group that looks to March as a transition season. They skied all winter; they are past the hundred day mark on the ski pass. To them they are starting to get burned out and looking to the change of season. This skier still goes skiing but they don’t take it as seriously as they did earlier in the winter. They will only go out on a nice sunny day but they are looking forward to that vacation to warm climates.

The last skier is the person that realizes that their skiing is as good as it is going to be this year, they have skied hard and now is the time to enjoy the fruits of their labor. They may or may not be going on a trip. The trip may just be heading to the hill for the weekend. It may be just hitting the local hill whenever they can. These skiers live a life style that they love. Just look around the slopes and you recognize them. They are the people that are just hanging out , the person at Krazy Days skiing the pond, the person on the back bowl just cruising, or the people hanging at the pipe.

Who’s got it figured out? We all do. We all have our reasons for being on the slope. Just watch the faces, they are all smiling.

www.bahnhof.com

Move Over.... Or…. A good time friend’s club with some plastic sticks thrown in the way? This is the question you should ask yourself when deciding if ski league is right for you. One other question is speed suit serious or free ski fun? Can you pull off the sausage casing or will the women and children run for the hills?

All joking aside, (for a moment anyway) ski league is a great way to share a night amongst your friends trying to re-live your racing heyday or just trying to get better at racing. For my team and me the name says it all. PBR, I know you’re thinking Pabst Blue Ribbon the beer your father or grandfather used to swill on a hot summer evening. Well that was our vision but, since it is a ski racing team it became Pure Bred Racing and yes we are the first kind of team listed above. We do have some serious racers in their speed suits and then there are the rest of us. One week will be wear your favorite retro or aged ski wear, then next maybe one piece night and another being camouflage or hunter’s wear. That’s the beauty of adult race league….. It can be whatever you want it to be. For us the name of the game is FUN.
You don’t have to be the best; all you need is the desire to have a good time with your friends outside sliding and gliding. Then only rule on our team is each week whoever has the backpack must supply the adult beverage to be enjoyed over the course of the evening. All and all it is a great way to spend the winter out and about with friends and the opportunity to make new ones. Dress right and put on your game face…… Or not. It is what you make of it in the end.
Oh and by the way. PBR is the defending champ this season.

So go fast and ski ya later, Dewey Skium.
www.bahnhof.com

A Couple of Great Ski League Choices
Volkl Racetiger RC
Nordica GS Pro

Time to Ski in Michigan

With the snow falling and accumulation growing everyone is trying to get to slopes. Up North here in Michigan the hills have been operating with a good base and skiers and snowboarders have been reveling in every minute possible out on the hill. I even know a handful of locals having a super sport double feature of surfing Little Traverse Bay in the morning and then heading to the hills in the afternoon! With all of the sports out there one to give some consideration is Snowshoeing. It doesn’t take much snow and with the limited equipment required its also at a great pricepoint!
The design of the snowshoe has come a long way in a short amount of time. No longer are the days of traditional wood and leather shoes. Todays snowshoes range from light metals to plastics. The Bahnhof offers ATLAS snowshoes which have a great “float”. The float is the way an individuals weight is displaced across the shoe. Snow shoes are fitted dependant upon a persons weight. They are great for beginners and this area for the snow fall we receive. A few tips for the novice getting ready to try snowshoes are to lengthen your stride from normal, practice on packed snow first it will be easier, the fluffier the more difficult and it will wear you out in an instant. Remember this is great exercise but it stresses a cardio workout! When walking with someone else remember to walk single file and take turns blazing the trail so you can ctach your breath. When you are just starting out try to go for an hour at a time and stay on familiar trails and always take water. Also a good rule of thumb for safety is to let someone know you are going out. This is a great winter activity for the whole family and it gives you a pace to really take in the beauty of our Northern Michigan winters. Come on in and talk with one of our staff about how we can get you out to start enjoying the season!!!......... So we come to the discussion of are you ready…..socks. There are many variations of ski socks out there and really you can’t go wrong unless you’re wearing your regular athletic socks, daily socks. Ski socks are available in a variety of knit blends and have special wicking properties that pull moisture away from your skin, keep your feet dryer and thus warmer and also prevent blisters. Usually ski socks also have special padding in areas of the shin toe and heel. The Bahnhof carries a vast selection of socks some of our favorites are Falke Ski socks because they are anatomically designed for the right and left foot. Falke Ski socks have an excellent construction and last!! Smartwool Ski socks are another cult favorite due to their soft cushy merino wool blend and animal friendly approach to business!!Go Smartwool!! Eurosocks offers flex ribs and arch braces to increase blood flow and wick away moisture as well. Eurosocks have a wide array of sizes from youth to adult! We always encourage taking two pairs of socks for your full day at the mountain as well. Change them at lunch and its like you start your day all over again!! Prevent old man winter from getting to your paws! Invest in some socks this winter your feet deserve it…………… Morupnorth

http://www.bahnhof.com/

Goggles, Goggles, Goggles......

So with all of the snow flying in Northern Michigan, winter has finally arrived!! A little earlier than expected but yes we are reveling in every powdery minute of it. The hills have both opened in our area!! Only with a few runs, but getting out is all it’s about. With this new tid-bit of news, I instantly have gotten out my board and boots, getting ready to take them into the shop to get tuned up for winter -because our shop tech boys are the best in town!! I’ve got my slew of jackets cleaned along with all the other gear required, but the one thing that I can’t find to save my life are my goggles. I have searched high and low and somehow the snow gear gnomes have taken my favorite Smith’s to another dimension and against my will I am forced to bond with a new pair this season. So the thought came to mind with all the different types how to choose the best style. I have a small noggin and a thin face, I can get away with almost wearing youth sizes! Alas, I have found that Smith works well for me. Also before the last time I purchased goggles my rationale was fashion first. Well then came the function part and I was back in Bahnhof Sport purchasing the pair that were the perfect combo of coloring and was what I actually needed. This means by size and for my optimum viewing potential on the hill. I also wore them as more of a headband which led to nothing but a foggy view when I did use them. I have compiled a little information to help find the perfect goggle for you. I learned the roundabout way and if you stick to some simple rules with all of the options, styles and fits it can be a lot easier and rewarding:

Take the time before you go to the mountain to stop at a ski shop. (Bahnhof is the best – subliminal jab) You will have a much larger selection, pay a lot less usually, have time to speak with knowledgeable staff, and be able to try a variety with your helmet. Please tell me everyone is wearing helmets!!
Step one, start with the lens options. Everything else is a supporting role in decision making!! Don’t worry we can get through this together. It all depends on the conditions of weather, terrain and activity.
In low light and fog, yellow, gold and amber lenses filter out blue light, emphasizing shadows in the snow so you can see bumps better. They also work well in moderate light.
Rose lenses are excellent on low-light gray days. And they're fun to wear.
In bright light, dark tints (especially green) will keep your eyes more comfortable.
Polarized lenses block reflected glare off the horizontal plane and are great when it's bright out. But they may not be ideal near the end of the day when long shadows appear in the snow, because they are usually made with a darker tint than most sun lenses.
Mirror (or "flash") coatings will block some, but not a lot of glare. They are usually more of a cosmetic than a practical feature.
For night riding and skiing, use only clear lenses.

With a variety of available goggles there are also OTG (over the glass) goggles that will allow you to still wear your prescription glasses, or there are also a variety of goggles where the lens slides in and you can have them specially made by your eye doc!
Always try as many on as possible and you may even want to ask if you can take them outside. This way you’ll have an opportunity to see how they look in outdoor lighting. Remember for night skiing from most manufactures the best lens would be clear. Scott has a lens that has been on the hill a couple of years called the Night Amplifier, This is actually a bluish lens that cuts the glare from the lights on the hill. You’ll want a glare free viewing when looking at lights in the evening along the runs and in the park.
Peripheral vision is also a major point in fitting a pair of goggles. In an ideal world you hope for a 180 degree view, from side to side. Take time to also see how compatible the goggle is with your helmet. Adjust the buckle; see if it’s easy and if it stays in place. If you are having difficulties ask for assistance or move on to another style. With the multiple options you’ll find the one that works best for you! The goggle bands also come in a variety of sizes. The wider the more comfortable is a good rule of thumb. Foam inserts are available to help eliminate snow from getting in and cross wind.
Take your time and also ask for warranty information, scratch resistant coatings to provide longevity for your lenses, and overall get out and have some fun in the snow!!!!

Snowy Days........ We have had three days of 0 degree weather and sunny skies. A resurgence of riding bikes, kayaking and bbq’s have been amidst the northern locals!! Well everyone beware because all of this will change in the blink of an eye as we all know!! The Dakotas just were hit with a blizzard!! This weekend ushers in a wintery mix of snow and sleet!! I will say that I am personally very excited to see the white stuff accumulate!! We have just received our ski league package from Nubs Nob. Every day I watch all the wintery inventory arrive and I just can’t wait to play!! This year I have decided that I am also going to start utilizing all the amazing winter trails in the area by foot versus my snowmobile. Why? Something new and the snowmobile trails around here are slowly disappearing and to cross many fields is becoming far too dangerous. Trailering them a few miles seems pointless and to go to the cabin can’t happen daily. So other than my first love snowboarding, I shall join the ranks of cross country skiers. I have just started to research this new for me sport and have come across some interesting facts that I thought other novices may be interested in:

1. There are 2 types of skis: waxable – you apply wax to match current conditions for the day
No-wax, grip pattern molded to the base, better for daily put on and go use especially with changing conditions

2. Stiffness – stiff skis are more for racers, they are faster but require more technique of gliding
A softer ski requires less force, remember to go faster glide as long as you can don’t try to move your arms faster,

3. A wide ski is more for flotation on snow, more for people who carry heavy packs more back country
A narrow ski allows for more speed, more for groomed trails

4. The length of the ski is decided upon your height, weight and skiing ability
General rule of thumb a shorter ski is easier to maneuver now usually around.

Now there are many price points for the different styles of poles, bindings, skis etc. I recommend coming into the store and checking out our inventory while talking with one of our trained professionals. We also have many rental options to fit your individual needs!!

See you on the trails..... Ok, let’s try this incredibly expensive underwear, it was a cold powder day in Park City Utah and I knew I was going to challenge myself hiking the peak to Jupiter bowl with my son. I threw on my new “skins’ and of course my Lasse Kjus jacket and pants, that’s all- just skins and a jacket and pant. I couldn’t believe how warm and comfortable I was, my blood seemed to keep pumping through to my feet and into my hands-can it be true that this state of the art compression first layer really works? Yes absolutely YES!! I have never been so comfortable busting two feet of powder, generally the next morning I can hardly get out of bed from the build up of lactic acid, but I wasn’t a bit sore-that’s a first. I highly recommend this new technical first layer, it seemed to keep my body at the perfect temperature hiking for skiing and no soreness. It’s available at http://www.bahnhof.com/ I think you will be impressed.

Lindy Smith

You Get What You Pay For....

Get what you pay for or not??—it always amazes me while working my sales floors at Bahnhof Sport when customers ask, “will this keep me warm and dry” while trying on a $200 jacket-“ah-well kind of” I reply tongue in cheek! Of course not –a $200 jacket takes approximately 20 minutes to make in any Asian factory-it has the bare minimum of 5000mm (waterproofing) to get it into the country as “rainwear”. The fabrics are cheap and the insulation at a minimum as well, it may look good but warm and dry-I don’t think so. So how much do you have to spend to be warm and dry?? Generally speaking you get what you pay for in the ski and snowboard industry-a good quality jacket that has 10 to 20,000 mm waterproofing, a quality dense fabric (waterproof by construction), or is a Gortex laminate, and has reflective layer insulation (reflects the body heat) is going to run you $400-$800 Some products at this price may have waterproof zippers and may be seamed sealed, which means they are totally waterproof. Just turn the jacket you are trying on inside out and you will then see how it is made , if you hold it up to the light and can see through it—it will not keep you WARM!! So please- you can spend what you want or can afford, but you do get what you pay for. Any product over $1,000, well, then you are paying for perhaps the name or the gold plated snaps or the hand cut Swarovski crystals- i.e. Bogner http://www.bogner.com/ or the space astronaut-like insulation from Lasse Kjus, http://www.kjus.com/ . Yes ,yes, yes you will be dry and VERY warm and look great as well-so look at it this way-if you wear the jacket from December through March-average the cost out and subtract the daily double lattes from Starbucks, You can most likely afford this-and wear it for years to come-quality is simply quality and the price is directly proportional-

Lindy Smith

Owner: Bahnhof Sport of Michigan, Colorado and Utah. http://www.bahnhof.com/

Lasse Kjus

WHO AND WHAT IS LASSE KJUS (pronounced lasse’ jus)? AMAZING LASSE, A NORWEGIAN GOLD MEDALIST IN SKIING HAS IS TAKING OVER THE SKI APPAREL INDUSTRY WITH HIS NAMES SAKE UNCOMPROMISING SKIWEAR LINE.

Getting in the gondola in Aspen last January I noticed that the 2 men and 1 woman were sporting the exact same jacket that I was wearing with great pride as owner of a small chain of ski shops, Bahnhof Sport-after busting some incredible breakable crud on Bell Mountain, I slid into Bonnie’s for lunch and again I seemed almost invisible with picnic tables of skiers wearing Kjus-the discerning Aspen clientele seems to have found an aspiring attitude of similarity in ski fashion or they are just plain smart about how to stay warm and look sleek. Ski retailer that I am I added up in my head that there was approximately $15,000 worth of Kjus sitting at Bonnie’s at noon on Saturday-but did they know what I knew?? That the PCM lining material is used in astronauts’ suits –microscopic tiny balls of wax that store body warmth and release it when the temps fall?? Nah-they just liked the sleek sexy look; I bet they didn’t even find the detachable purse that is in their jacket; well I felt like dropping my card off at each table-hey buy Kjus from me! Guess I will get an orange Viper jacket this year and leave my black one in the closet –maybe I will stand out!

Check out the complete selection of KJUS Mens & Ladies Ski Clothing at: http://www.bahnhof.com/sports/dept.asp?s_id=0&dept_id=3284&dp_id=&

September..........................by Morupnorth

Schools back in session, the people are gone and you can actually make it thru Bay View in a respectable time. Yes it’s fall before the color tours begin. I will say that I am reveling in the cooler climates and have taken on a Betty Crocker attitude in the kitchen. I am trying to dial in the perfect cookie to make everyone’s mouth water. I am almost there but I don’t think that Steve minds much since he gets to eat all the test batches!! This is the time of year I get excited to pull my sweaters and uggs out. Also ,sitting outside at night in front of the chimenea is highly enjoyable. While we were out last night relaxing and looking for shooting starts the conversation came up of folklore. By this I am speaking of wether or not anyone thought that this was going to be a mild or wild winter! I cross my fingers for the latter. I love love love love love snow. So the debate began and I was surprised how many farmers tell tale signs and old wives tales we came up with. Now if you are unfamiliar with the whole idea there is folklore then there is weatherlore. Folklore are beliefs based on fear and superstition. By Morupnorth

The end of summer is here and the transition into the September chill is becoming evident. As the sun falls and temps drop you notice the leaves are changing and warm foods are tasting better…..overall I cannot complain for the amazing season I have had! Golfing has been superb, kayaking the beautiful waterways in northern Michigan will also be memories that I will have for a long time. I’m still trying to get in on a Midnight Paddle!! Boating in the Bay, especially on the fourth of July and during the Regatta are other snapshot favorites! Bike races galore, running the bike path in the evening and Sunday movies in the park. Wow, we are really lucky to live in an area that we can enjoy the outdoors in a multitude of ways!! As I appeared to get a little nostalgic about summer, a decision was made to eat dinner in Cross Village. Everyone that resides up north knows that means Leggs in, on the bluff. Jenna and I chose to drive up the windy, scenic M-119 also known as the tunnel of trees. It was beautiful with the sun slowly setting on the horizon and light shining through the trees. Since we left around dinner time there wasn’t a lot of action on the road which made it for a relaxing drive. On the other hand, Steve and Pete rode trails from Brutus up to cross village on their bikes. They were a little sportier than I this weekend, but everyone deserves to be lazy now and then!! As we were eating dinner, the topic came to what to do for the upcoming Labor Day Weekend. Options, options…I finally settled on a combo weekend. This means staying in town with friends and also getting away. I really am crossing my fingers that Mother Nature plays nicely this weekend! I plan on a last hur-rah Bbq on Friday, watching some of the Del-Mac on Saturday morning and then we’ll point it north to my cabin in Grand Marais. I want to hike pictured rocks, ride some trails and if the
wind is right possibly surf….ish, I’m very green thank goodness Steve is patient!! I am also excited that I am finally able to wear some of the winter goods that we have been unpacking. Have I mentioned that Patagonia is here?!?! This makes me very happy, and this available colors and tech features are superb!! I can’t wait to wear my new Integral Jacket without melting!! I know that it’s inevitable but as the season changes its a little bittersweet. I’ve had such good times this summer, but I know fall holds even more….so I suppose it’s goodbye balmy evenings, bbq’s, and warm waters. It’s more of a hello to crisp mornings, full wetsuits and getting ready for the trees to paint the horizon……...

.................... I did an Upper Peninsula tour with friends and there were great times with perfect weather let me tell ya!! I even got to drop the “U betch ya” and “eh?” a ton!! It always feels good to cross the Mighty Mac. It feels like vacation instantly for me. I leave all the life stress in the lower half of the state and get ready to have an adventure because you always do on these types of weekends. We hit up The Grand Marais Music Festival on Friday and had a blast!! Lake Superior Brewing Company knows how to make a fabulous pizza and the perfect combo for growlers to take home!! Then we were off to Marquette for the Ore to Shore Bike Race. It was a little chilly in the morning but the rain was appreciated since it packed down the trails and cut the humidity. The 49 mile race through the scenic areas of Marquette took a little over 3 hours and only one of our team had a flat!! Oh but there was also one random fly by bee sting that left Steve with a swollen arm, who needs to see definition in their wrist to ride?? No allergies and a little Benadryl we were off to continue the vacation. Now this is not a joke. This same weekend was the Pirate Festival. I never knew one existed and felt superbly underdressed since I forgot my eye patch and peg leg!! We shivered our timbers down at this restaurant called the Up Front. They had great live music after the awards ceremony and food was delicious. We loaded up the car on Sunday and pointed it back south. I won’t lie Sundays driving through the upper half of Michigan is beautiful but tedious!! If you get behind a camper best be aware they really like to drive 25 MPH!!! No matter the year, make or model…..We got home in the early evening to leave enough time to relax and then head downtown with blankets and coffee to watch the Movie in Pennsylvania Park. To our amazement it was Goonies! !! The turnout was huge and the screen was as enormous for our viewing pleasure, possibly larger than a normal cinema one. The sky was clear and air was kinda crisp, but I snuggled down and enjoyed it thoroughly!! Overall, a great weekend to go down in the summer ’08 books! Well that’s all for now….until the next adventure!! .......Morupnorth

http://www.bahnhof.com

Dog Days of Summer... by Morupnorth

Welcome to August everybody!! The last month of the summer and so far what a season it’s been! Busy, busy, busy! From work to play there is always something in the works. Every Sunday there is “Leggs Inn” up in Cross Village is always a weekly tradition. We head up to a friend’s cabin, eat great food then go to shake a leg and watch an amazing sunset. Someone with our crew is always up for midweek kayak ventures down the Bear River or Jordan. With all of the festivals in the area there is nooo room for boredom. Venetian Festival was last weekend which is always a blast. The fireworks seem to get better and better every year and the marina looks amazing after the construction cleared! This weekend is Kid Rock and Polish Fest
down in Boyne City. The concert at Boyne has become an annual summer tour which gravitates mass people! How can you resist a concert on the hill at the mountain? If you head a little further south you may run into one of my best friends Jaime. She’s a ring leader at the Polish Festival. For 3 days now she’s been cooking up pirogues’, drinking spirits and u bet your doopa that she’s gotten her Polka on! I’ll make my sauerkraut adventure Sunday when I can also take in the Mud Bog!! I have to give Steve a shout out! He’s biking out in Arizona with Travis. They’ve taken in some great trails in the Moab area (he has taken a couple diggers…but Travis crashed in the parking lot!). They’ve even done some hiking in extreme 100+ temps!! Can’t wait to see the pics! This next weekend will be one to go down in the books. It’s a trifecta of fun. Why do you ask? Reason #1 Dewy is getting hitched!!! Congrats Dewy and Lisa!! #2 Grand Marais Music Festival, if you haven’t gone…go...music on the beach and bluff, family friendly fun, pictured rocks is there and fantastic kayaking and hiking. Just a gem up there!! #3 is the Ore to Shore Bike Race which is Michigan’s largest single start mountain bike race so it should be impressive! So all in all I’m just reveling in summer and hoping everyone is doing the same, until next time………. and trust me the stories will be good!!!

Having Fun...... (Other than music fest up in Grand Marais, we’ll blog that in August.) This year we are lucky with an extended weekend to really enjoy the beautiful weather Mother Nature has given us. Sparklers are back in season and writing words in the sky. Great food, festivals and parades are everywhere. I think the most entertaining event is the Horton Bay Parade. (tid bit – this is where Ernest Hemingway had his wedding reception in 1921 at the Pinehurst) If you go, bike there trust me!! There is far too much traffic at that shindig and you can catch the bike trail to ride back into town for all of Petoskey’s events afterwards. We are lucky to get 2 nights of stunning fireworks. July 3rd Bay Harbor lights up the sky at dusk. Their fireworks are usually impressive! The fourth is always the best to see the battle across the bay. I mean, by this, Petoskey versus Harbor Springs. I am crossing my fingers for fabulous weather and so far it looks perfect upper 70’s and sunny all weekend. Believe it or not there is also zero humidity!! When the sun is getting ready to set on the 4th the option arises which side of the Bay to be on. I opt for the best view the boat!! Gary chooses to Kayak, I prefer the motor!! Regardless, there is nothing like sitting in the Little Traverse Bay right under all the action. You also get the best view of our million dollar sunsets. The colors that streak across the sky and mirror themselves on the water are brilliant. The remainder of the weekend we will be on the water for sure!! The Petoskey Marina filled up fast this year so we will be lake hopping. I love my job since we get all this amazing gear in to play with and it never stops!! The newest thing to bring me smiles is the Sevylor Drag’n Master covered towable. I was a sucker for the name at first, guess what? Not disappointed! We have taken it over to Crooked Lake and on Walloon Lake. This tube is some serious fun!! I love skipping across the water since I am afraid to water ski or do any sport that requires being in the upright position on water!! I am clumsy. Anyhoo, you add two people a driver a spotter and you’ve definitely got yourself an awesome time with this water toy! It’s large enough for two people and easy to hang onto!!! No matter where your holiday weekend takes you and yours I hope it is a safe and enjoyable time!!

Go Play......... Time is flying by all ready this summer. I feel like I blink and poof another week is over. It seems that each weekend there is some travel plans in the works and off I go. This brings to thought what makes a great trip. Last weekend took me to Grand Rapids to support Steve at his 8 hour endurance bike race or it could even be like last night when “the crew” went paddling on Walloon Lake.
Step one is to make sure you bring sunscreen where ever you go. I thought 15 would work since it’s the beginning of summer. Guess again my lobster red body disagreed. I only rock the 30+ now.
My necessities for the bike race included: I pod w/ all my favorites, a book my pick “Hairstyles of the Damned” by Joe Meno, snackies, Camelback of course, energy food for Steve, my PrAna Lola dress which has basically become my uniform ever since I laid eyes on it! Get one ladies, it will change your life! Tent for shade and I was good. It was a great day a little rain but it cut the humidity and then a sunny afternoon for a great sun setting finish. Good job Steve he got second!!
Last night Missy, Gary, Steve and I decided to paddle after work. It was amazing! The temp stayed at 78, the lake was glass and the sky was such an amazing blue, wonderful. The gear that was included for this fabulous journey was kayak of course with paddle, PFDs the new ones are great from Astral the ladies fit is phenomenal, bilge pumps for spraying each other, sunscreen!!, and we tried out the Seattle Sports Catch Cooler, crackers, sausage, cheese and a couple “pops” we were good to go! We paddled a couple miles and looked for the bald eagles that inhabit the lake. We ended up seeing a turtle and heard a frog. Missy caught a glimpse of a loon.
Great stories, nice pics and the serenity that lake offers is soul healing.
All in all…any trip, provided you have the right equipment can really make a difference. So cheers to summer adventures, stop in and say hi! We’d love to help you get the gear you need for the memories July and August have waiting for you!!!
Blog ya later gators!!!!! ............ Easily installed and removed, they make life on the water simple. These deck-side coolers offer super-convenient access for stowing and keeping your catch fresh during a day on the water. Built with a thermally efficient heat reflective exterior and closed cell foam insulation. An easy to clean pull out fish bag allows you to keep the insulated shell on the boat, while you go ashore with the catch. Two sizes to easily accommodate trout to bonefish. These Catch Coolers also make great deck top coolers for any paddler.

www.bahnhof.com

Link to the Catch cooler: http://www.bahnhof.com/sports/product.asp?s_id=0&prod_name=Seattle+Sports+Kayak+Catch+Cooler&pf_id=PAOHADPEBFKKNBGB&dept_id=3313&mscssid=603A5BUK4F078HGDG38UQ1NERA500439

Keep on Wheeling..... by Morupnorth

The other day my friends and I were reminiscing about toys from our youth. Take a moment to revel in past memories that include puffalumps, Masters of the Universe He-man & She-ra, pogo balls, lawn darts, voltron and my favorite THE BIG WHEEL. I started thinking about how much fun that plastic 3 wheeled machine was. I remember jumping on my big wheel and racing down the sidewalks pedaling as fast as my legs could go then just as I would get to the max speed of prob 1 mile per hour it would be hand brake time! Yes my mother scored with the upgraded version. So much easier to attempt donuts when you weren’t dependant on just throwing your weight to the side! My youth saw 3 big wheels. #1 went to the graveyard due to tred issues remember once you heard thunk thunk thunk you knew your time was limited, #2 had a blow out on the front fork and good ol #3 I just plain outgrew. That was a sad day when you realize that you couldn’t pull the seat back any further and it was time to upgrade to a 2 wheeler! You could always turn it over and voila you had your very own ice cream machine…now I know I’m not alone in this. So I decided to do a little big wheel re-con. I searched all over the internet and to my amazement I found it. Ready? Adult sized big wheels, and by this I don’t mean adults on kids big wheels, I mean big kids toys!! The newer technology has vastly improved the tire issues because now they are made with rubber and even have hardened steel axles. One of these babies will set you back approx $300.00. So as I was contemplating how cool it would be to zip around town on one of these, then I read the fine print- they are discontinued!! So as I cursed out profanities at my innocent computer I took a breath and realized I’m not 7 anymore, may act like it a little but some memories are meant to stay in the past so that you can look back and smile…….who are we kidding I’m still on the search for this holy grail of 3 wheel fun…….to be continued………. Morupnorth

www.bahnhof.com

June in Michigan,,, Paddle on... Everything is in bloom, the lilacs my favorite smell heavenly. The bike path always has someone on tour. The marina is full with the usual variety of boaters. Everyone seems to have taken on the task of what I like to call grass wars. A.k.a. who has the greenest lawn mind you with patterns. You smell barbeques everyday at dinner time and we even had the addition of a picnic table for lunch!!! Thanks Lindy!!! With the transformation of weather comes the fun of picking how to beat the heat. We are lucky enough to live in an area that has water everywhere. From rivers, lakes to a hot skip away- the bay.
We have officially broken out our kayaks here for a summer demo already ,which was a great success. I am just a recreational touring kayaker but I love it. I enjoy going out for a calm paddle while the other advanced paddlers here like Gary and Missy can take on more rapid rivers. I was thinking what a great activity this is and that no matter what level you may be at it’s a good way to cool off and hit the water. The ease of a kayak versus a canoe and the ability to pilot one solo is a big advantage. Not to mention it uses organic power not gas…haha! So if you’re looking for a new way to enjoy these beautiful June days may I suggest kayaking? To own or rent you’ll thank me. It’s great fun for the whole family. Check out our pics which will be updated thruought summer. We even started an interactive advisor, on our website, to help break down the options of gear available. This past weekend I attended my first cycling race at Boyne Mountain. The 12 & 24 Hour Mountain Bike Endurance Race / Michigan Endurance Series at that! The loop was 9.5 miles and there were varying entries from solo riders to 4 person teams. The race started at 12 and went until the next day. I was there to support a friend who was riding his first solo race. Amazing that he averaged 50 min laps consistently, even after he “taco-d” his bike when he crashed and split his helmet!! Now can we all take a moment to realize the importance of wearing properly fitted helmets and safety gear!?! I was impressed with the perseverance of all the riders. The support of the pit crews was immeasurable and the camaraderie that grew thru the day was electrifying. When day turned to night the music faded and tent lamps illuminated the trail head checkpoint. At this point I had a giant epiphany of what it takes to perform this physical feat and that cyclists opt for zero tissue when blowing their noses! Then I retired to bed , riders went thru the night even with the temperature dropping to near frosty levels! When I went back to the track at 7:30 the sun was back up and all the athletes were still making their laps. All of the riders gave me inspiration to get back on my bike. Now mind you it is a beach cruiser and not even close to the caliber of bikes that were being ridden, but at the same time it’s just getting out and enjoying yourself. Even if you don’t own a bike you can borrow or rent one, like at the Bahnhof, yes a shameless plug. But, it’s true!! Just to get outside claim a little of your youth back and feel the wind in your hair is quite a liberating feeling. I’ll leave you with a quote this time from a man we all know, Mark Twain…… “Get a Bicycle. You will not regret it if you live.”

Have a great ride..... The weather has definitely been teasing us switching from sunny upper 60’s to rainy, dreary 40’s…Ahhh yes this is that time of year that golfers brave the greens and surfers wait for winds from the north in the bay. Everyone in anticipation of getting their boats out of storage and down to the marina’s for that first tour on our waterways. The local Kayakers have been enjoying tours despite the cold climates and our sunsets have been ever so fabulous. Everything is greening up and I can see that the lilacs have sprouted and the trillium in the woods have taken over again. Memorial day is upon us which is a marker of summer and a 3 day weekend! I know a lot of people that camp for this <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RjhSnR6_CTM/SDccZKak6uI/AAAAAAAAAEE/o3tLgEQE8ek/s200/raccoon_5916.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5203659113068030690" />holiday and I thought I’d drop some helpful hints that always have made my trips a little more enjoyable:
1. If you think that you are as funny as a sitcom character and your camping trip is going badly, do not say, “Look on the bright side: At least the weather’s nice.”
2. Though not widely reported, America’s possums and raccoons are pitted against each other in a fierce turf war. Avoid getting caught in the crossfire!!!!
3. When hiking in bear country, invite companions whom you can outrun. Rub a copious amount of bacon grease on their backpacks each morning.
Last but not least this is the most important! Write this down if needed but do not forget, this has helped me thru many an eventful trip:
4. To hike, you must wear the proper foot attire. This doesn’t mean that it has to be function over fashion I’ve got really cute boots. Anyhoo back to the golden rule..you put one foot in front of the other. This will eventually propel you in a forward direction. Keep a steady pace repeating this action thousands of times, you will theoretically begin to experience this thing called “outdoor fun!”
At least this is what I’m told every time I go out, and if all else fails remember that you are in gorgeous Northern Michigan and there is always beer!

The Morel by Maya Boogserfrozn

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RjhSnR6_CTM/R-5rdRELzYI/AAAAAAAAAD0/z29ICLkJots/s320/Betsy_ss.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5183198371691351426" />
Spring is here, finally. April is just days away, and if Mother Nature is feeling generous, she will give way to sunshine with short jaunts of rain peppered through out the month to help melt the snow that is left from this incredibly ferocious winter we have had. Soon we will be basking in the rays on our endless Michigan lakeshores, gliding through our precious inland lakes on our new Wilderness Systems state of the art, touring kayak, or cruising the Little Traverse Wheel Way, wind in our hair, sun on our face, bare feet and all. We do however, here in Michigan, have a brief layover period, before we can reach those well dreamt about activities that our beautiful state provides us. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RjhSnR6_CTM/R--qXxELzZI/AAAAAAAAAD8/OtNwsUuvu84/s320/473046681_e51b542afd_m.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5183549021411331474" />

This layover period, straight up sucks for those living in the suburbs of Detroit as they eagerly anticipate those warm summer days. Up here in Gods Country however, a transformation occurs not only in the season, but in the people as well. Chefs, Fireman, Ski-boot Slingers, Librarians, Teachers, Doctors, and Janitors alike all become one under that shared occupation of….Treasure Hunter. These possessed soles are not hunting for gold, rubies, and diamonds, no; their treasure is one that can only reveal its true rewards when ingested. I am talking about mushrooms. The Morel Mushroom is an elusive and delicate culinary delight and is so incredibly versatile, that hunting for them and finding new ways to cook with them are equally as exciting. When the trees, ground, leaves, lakes and ponds, begin to break free of winters icy encasement, and the springs and rivers begin to rage, rainfall becomes more common and the melting snow turns our forests into lush breeding grounds for these delectable members of the fungi family. Michiganders become high with fever like a lover obsessed, and getting lost in the woods is worth it for a hearty satchel of earthly delights. You have now been let in on one of Northern Michigan’s most sacred rituals. However, just because you now know about this holy past time, does not mean you can easily join. Mid-Westerners from all over come to sweep our forests for the all-mighty Morel, and our secrets are protected more heavily than the Holy Grail. Where do you find this succulent treasure? Ask me and I’ll tell you….in the woods.

Post Script for Poachers by Maya Boogserfrozn

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RjhSnR6_CTM/R9xFFqZAgTI/AAAAAAAAADk/8XFOxCTDiVI/s320/poaching.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5178089635150070066" />
The deadline is up and congrats to all you poachers. After all, working in a resort town gives me the financial freedom to ski in Chamonix, Aspen, anywhere my heart…oh wait no, that’s, that’s not me. Ok, well being a local certainly allows me the time to cruise out to the hill on those oh so anticipated big pow days that we all wait for so I can shred the, oh wait no, nope that’s when I have to be at work for those out-of-towners who stop in before heading out. Well at least at the end of a work day I can look forward to a night out on the town with an elaborate 4-star dinner, followed by dancing, and a sleigh ride under the stars thanks to my handsome sugar daddy I picked up from my last aerobics class, oh wait no, no that’s right, Ill be the one serving that couple planters punch this summer when I part-time as a cater-waiter.
Jip. Ok so what is being a local good for?
A question most of us know the answer to, although it isn’t obvious to those who work like dogs all year just to spend their week-long Christmas vacation up here, which is barely enough time to rip a few runs, down a few drinks, and gobble down a Gurneys Sandwich (Baked in Telluride sammy to the western crew). We enjoy fringe benefits such as an empty mountain on a crispy morning, nothing but the sound of the upper crust breaking beneath your newly sharpened edges, which was free of charge. Driving home from work and without realizing it you find yourself higher and higher in elevation until you come to a stop in the closest parking spot to the lift, you knew to through your gear in the truck this morning. One of my favs came to realization yesterday when I did just that, I decided to get a few turns in after work and was surprised to see a pretty knarly crowd, forgetting that it’s Krazy Daze, big party going on. Anyways some Canadian asked me how much a lift ticked was and when I opened my mouth to answer him, I realized I didn’t have one. I have no idea what a daily pass would cost. I shot him my best guess and went on my way, knowing he was watching me walk away, I could feel his envy piercing into my back.
There are many reasons why people like myself choose to dwell in these cozy communities of docile endeavors. I love my perks, but the truth is who wouldn’t want to live in a town, where they are constantly surrounded by unbelievable natural beauty, smiling faces, and an average snow fall of 140” a year.

Poachers... by Maya Boogserfrozn

I have recently been reminded that there are still four resorts in this allegedly “free” country that forbids the use of snowboards, better known as “skiboards” to those of you who have not yet been tempted by the dark side and not to mention really annoy me. Obviously as someone who has embraced snowboarding with a borderline inappropriate passion, I find this fact leaving me ill. Some have argued that snowboarders make it dangerous because our long and graceful turns interfere with their lightening fast hip-pops and flailing arm movements. Others find us to be the trouble-causing types, the kind of people you wouldn’t want your daughter out with past 11:00 on a Saturday night or a Wednesday night…or a Monday afternoon. Well I’ve got news for all you Dewey Skiums out their, be careful what you wish for, Burton just might make sure you get it.
In reaction to this embittered oppression that the skiing society has inflicted upon us, Burton is handing out a $5,000 purse to the best documentation of the “poaching” of each of these four resorts. Encouraging Tom Foolery and reeking havoc are two of the mainstays that have been reinstated into the snowboarder job description. So if you are one of the powder puff, fair-weather skiers that take solace in the lack of baggie pants, soft boots, and yeeeehhewwwwws echoing through your precious, constantly corduroy covered mountain…watch out, there are poachers lurking in the dark, waiting for the kill. And I have seen snowboarders do worse, for much less than 5 G’s.

Breakin' the Mid Winter Blues... by Dewey Skium

Yawn…… Sniff…….. Cough………….. Feels like the dead of winter and the joy of shredding the local ski areas has really lost its charm. Sure, there’s the HOUR of POWER, where you go as hard and as fast as you can for one hour and then call it a day. So… Let’s see that’s one hour down. Now what? This is where I AM at this time of year in the place they call “God’s Country.” So what to do to break this mundane existence?????? It’s time to get creative and do things out of the ordinary and put the imagination back into gear. Here what I can suggest……
1. Go Bump Jumping. Ok. What’s bump jumping right? Well some brainiac came up with the idea of mounting a ski to seat and then using this tool of destruction to rip down the hill at a crazed pace while trying to keep your balance. What ensues is utter maniacal fun. I found myself squealing like a school girl who just got a new “my little pony” lunch box the week before school starts. If you want a picture or the “how to build a bump jumper” stay tuned.
2. Go downhill skiing…. ON CROSS COUNTRY SKIS. This is the equivalent of trying to pole vault with a no.2 pencil. Shear madness, but fun and if you can do it well, invite your friends and get ready for the deepest belly laugh you have had in years. It’s amazing how you forget everything you ever learned about dexterity and balance, then, trade it in for the ability to stand like a newborn fawn. (deer for the non outdoor people) The skis don’t turn, the boots aren’t sturdy the poles are long and in the way. But what an absolute HOOT. If you are an alpine skier, it won’t take long and you will be able to conquer a hill the size of one an ant would build, with the exuberance of an Olympic athlete. Your style will look disgraceful and your legs will wobble but the smile on your face will be brighter than the hot lamp keeping the fries warm at Micky D’s. That’s the hook. An absolute riot.
3. Runner Sled. Not for the faint of heart. For most this is a sled that has two metal runners and you lay on your stomach head first. To me….. It’s an adrenaline fueled fun rocket. What you do here is go out to the country roads with a friend. Aka: transport. Find a snow/ice covered steep grade road, get dropped off at the top and take a deep breath. Have your transport head to the bottom. Jump on your Rocket (runner sled) and get ready for the ride of the day. This is best done on a road with no traffic, mind you. I would suggest goggles as you are going head first like an athlete competing in the skeleton event in Lake Placid. Runner sleds can be difficult to find, I would suggest trying the resale shop tour, if no luck there. It’s time to get serious in your search and begin in the summer and hit the garage sale tour. These sleds of joy were quite popular in the 60’s and 70’s and many people just have them taking up space in the garage or attic. Thus, making them very affordable in the summer.
4. Card board classic. This one is easy. Buy a case of your favorite barley and hops beverage. Share with friends, when the box is empty; see who can ride it down the hill.
Well…. This is all my attention span will allow me to share this time around. So, until next time, make the most of the great season we call winter. As spring is just around the corner and another fun season of sliding and gliding has passed us by.
Peace,
Dewey Skium

February's of Michigan, By Maya Boogserfrozn

It’s the end of February. Now to most of the U.S. this means spring is pretty much here. Sunnier days, warmer temps, bikini shopping, right? Wrong. I reside in the very beautiful Northern Michigan, however it is the month of February that usually places a hideous mask over my enchanting home. The snow turns to water, then to black ice. The trees are no longer covered in fluffy white snow, but are bare, leaving them naked and defenseless from the icy breath of lake Michigan. You no longer hear thrashing waves along the shore; the water is still and frozen, leaving nothing but a barren desert of ice and snow that is friend only to ice fisherman armed with a 30 pack of PBR and a 5th of Jack. Well my friends, an ice fisherman, I am not. Although I have attempted to engage in the activity, the only interest I have found to be attached to it is the armor itself. It is February that is the only fragment of Winter that I dread, the beauty and excitement of Winter dissolves and all you can do is count the days until milder conditions and drift into a paused state of discontent.
Ok, sorry for that, I was reflecting on last February and accidentally slipped into a typing induced coma. This year I am STOKED!!! Never, in my 24 years as a Michigander have I seen so many days of sunshine in a row and all that fall between the 1st and 28th, in this case 29th of February. I would gladly french any camo-wearing Darryl in any crappy ice shanty adorning Lake Michigan if it lead to February’s like this one, I don’t care how much whiskey they’ve had or how many celebratory kisses they’ve shared with a brown trout. Tomorrow is the last day before March and I have never been so sad to see a February go. What has lead to my sudden and pure abandonment of my previously embraced hatred of February? Sun! I’m talking about bluebird, Big Sky, switching from your low-light lenses, kind of Sun!!
The conditions have been hard and fast due to the ever-dropping temps which has been fun only because those days have been interrupted by brief interludes of cloudiness leading to Winter Storm warnings that shut-down half the state! Leaving this girly plenty of time for indulgence of the FRESHIES!! I have had so much fun in fact, that after wrapping my truck around a telephone pole last week, I barely batted an eye as I surveyed the debris around me, however, choked on my own frozen tongue when I realized I was lacking transportation to the hill that night! I cursed my co-worker, who shall remain nameless—Pete, for needing a ride home, of course he lives atop a steep hill which is notoriously icy in the winter. After the imaginary tongue-lashing I gave him in my now totaled vehicle, I wasted no time in renting the ever-so-sleek Cobalt, to get my ass to that upcoming powder that I was anticipating for the next morning.
I hope all you Michiganders are with me on this when I say, thank you Father Christmas, Mother Nature, Jack Frost or whoever the hell is responsible for this refreshing time period that so beautifully has fallen between January and March. February, you have redeemed yourself! And may I just say…YES MICHIGAN!!!

-M.B.

Legends of the Snow By L

I believe my father introduce me to him when I was ten or so, in Michigan, circa late 50's- I will never forget the stauesque, blond haired man with piecing blue eyes and white lips (I think zinc oxide). I had never seen such a remarkable skier -so fluid and graceful and then he took off and did a flip over a ski jump-his arms spread straight out and his skis together -an aerial before the days of freestyle-his name was STEIN ERIKSEN. And so the years have gone by and my third generation family business has taken me to park city Utah-and the legend lives on in deer valley; the man with balletic beauty is still sought after for a run or two. Swanlike in his grace he is still a wonder to behold and soon to celebrate his 80th birthday he is a true legend of the snow-happy birthday stein.

Lindy Smith owner Banhnof Sport

Volkl Twin Tip skis

Volkl has hit a home run with their Twin Tip skis this year. FUNCTION by Maya Boogserfrozn

I spent a few hours over at the Petoskey store today and because we had a full staff, I was able to take some time to sit back and absorb our Saturday customers. They sipped their lattes as they perused the ’08 skis. And it was about 45 minutes into this sip and see, that my spying game revealed something. All but a few of my customers were asking for anything more than an aesthetically pleasing topsheet.
I realized I was wasting my time by asking questions like, where do you do most of your skiing? What level skier are you? Are you even listening to what I’m saying? It was about the 5th customer in that I realized, they weren’t. We have reached a time in our tiny little snow sports community that I have dreaded, however expected to fall upon us…. fashion dominates function.
It has recently been brought to my attention that the freeride community, a much appreciated sub-culture that has grown in the recent years, has dangled its cool, laid back lifestyle in front of traditional skiing society and now, it has become an exclusive club and everyone wants in. When did everything become so superficial? When did the satisfaction of skiing come from the design on the ski and not of the ski?
This notion began to eat at me, so I headed over the office to do some research. In my reading I found that the ever-growing trend of free-ride culture, although rejected in the earliest years of those pesky snowboarders (who are now just as respected as any skier and maybe even the object of envy to some) has perhaps blinded some to the more important aspect of your favorite piece of sporting equipment…function.
I began to relax when I delved further into my research and realized something very important…just because the ski looks amazing, doesn’t mean that’s all it can do. Thanks to companies like Rossignol, who features 45 ski models for 2008, and K2 who features 31, men, women, racers, freeriders, and freestylers alike, can have unlimited options. As the design of skis have widened in recent years (waist widths that are under 65 mm are pretty rare these days) it has allowed for more models to emerge and therefore allows the artist more room for creativity and originality. As the twin-tips have become more mainstream, so has the alternative look of snowboarders and other freeriders that was originally scorned by the skiing community. I can remember building kickers in the backyard, because Nubs Nob wouldn’t allow snowboarders, and look at the progress that community has made, now ski-bunny mom wants a sick new pair of K2 Nancys and cant even get them because they are sold out everywhere! And look at the Nancy! It isn’t just a random collection of sugar and spice, the images tell a twisted story of politics, murder, and something to do with a scary-ass doll face that makes me want to tinkle in my pants a little. Another shocker is Volkl’s The Wall, it contains cryptic black and gray Van Gogh-like images one of which is a person being inserted with a gasoline nozzle in an area that Im pretty sure you can’t show on basic cable, although who knows these days.
Having shed light onto this new information, I can head back to the shop relaxed, and realize when my next graphic driven customer comes in wanting a pair of skis inappropriate for the kind of skiing they do, I can find satisfaction in knowing one important fact…the versatility of skis has become more versatile, and the adaptability of today’s skier can afford them that aesthetically pleasing topsheet. Ski bums like me can rest easy knowing that the technology of skis is ever progressing, and even though detailed graphics are what sells, the engineers behind the product will never stop making sure that design of that ski is what makes you smile on that mountain, even though you think it’s the design on the ski.

Maya Boogserfrozn

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bahnhofsport.blogspot.com/2007/12/fashion-v-function-by-maya-boogserfrozn.html' title='FASHION V. A video card will fix it to be exact, and they run anywhere from 100-150 dollars. Let’s talk for a minute about what one could do with that kind of money at the start of ski season. There is an unlimited range of possibilities that any of you who enjoy winter sports could think of to spend that money on, but I want to focus on a pair of ski pants, as that is where my story begins.

With the eve of Nubs Nob opening upon us, I decided to go look for a pair of new ski pants to get the season started off on the right foot. I found a pair that not only looked great, but they were comfortable, warm, and fit my vision of what my outfit would look like this year. Here I am beaming with joy, when all of a sudden someone turned the lights out and reminded me that I needed to buy a new video card and perhaps I should do that instead of buying these pants. I hate it when a reality check creeps up on you like a face plant on the first day of the year, for an instant I thought maybe this person was right and buying the video card would be the responsible thing to do, but then it happened.

I realized that a new pair of pants and comfort on the hill was far more important than getting my computer up and running. While I understand the important a nice computer, I also know that being a skier is part if who I am. Being on the hill is the one place where I find complete peace and the crap in the world happening around me doesn’t exist. It’s my time and nobody can take that away from me. Sure I could have bought that video card and instead skiing in fresh snow at nubs this morning in my new pants, I would have been sitting at a computer paying bills and looking a news page with no good news in it at all.

I urge you all to be a little irresponsible now and again, because sometimes it’s the push we need to remember what is good in life. We have our whole lives for paying bills, working and buying video cards, but it is only few moments in life that matter and those are the moments that we remember because we are full of bliss. So my friends, do me a favor this ski season and don’t forget to treat yourself, take care of yourself and others, and always always always have a sick pair of pants in your closet to wear to the hill.

That’s all for now…..

They claim to be hip and cool but when you buy skis from them through the internet* (red flag) mount them up and shred, thats the last you here of service. If you break them or even worse use them like any new schooler, park rider or jibber would, they blow up or break and you are out of luck. The company then seems to vanish like Houdini and there is no support or warranty. MAJOR buzz kill and no more riding, sliding or gliding without major shortage of cash, cuz you shelled out for new twins. The second time around I wised up and went to a reputable shop and found companies that are not only making sweet skis but, would also stand behind the product they make. So, I guess the point I am making is don’t be fooled by the fantasy of core with the reality of weak ass skis that won’t stand the test of time. Support your local shop and they will support you.

Ski ya later,Dewey

* (red flag) they sell through the internet ‘cuz no reputable shop will carry their sorry ass line.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://bahnhofsport.blogspot.com/2007/11/picking-right-twins-by-dewey-skium.html' title='Picking the right twins.
